Eastport is an island city -- comprised entirely of islands! Moose
Island is the largest, with Carlow, Dog, Treat,
Burial, Spectacle, Matthews, Goose, Dyer, and numerous
islets making up the remainder.
Although islands, Moose Island is connected, by way of a tidal-dam
causeway (built during the never-completed Quoddy
Tidal Power Project of the 1930s) to Carlow Island, which is in
turn similarly connected to Pleasant Point
Passamaquoddy Reservation (known to the Passamaquoddy as
"Sipayik" [pronounced "zih-by'-ihg") on the
mainland.
And, in the summertime, Moose Island, Eastport, is connected by
way of water taxi (foot traffic, only) to Lubec, Maine. For those
traveling further, a toll ferry sails from Campobello
Island, New Brunswick, to Deer Island, New
Brunswick, while a free Canadian government ferry operates between
Butler Point in Lambertville on Deer
Island and L'Etete on the New Brunswick
mainland.
Being surrounded by deep water, Eastport has historically been a
significant port for shipping. (Another port facility in the Quoddy
Loop exists at Bayside, New Brunswick, on the Saint
Croix River just north of St. Andrews.)
Formerly, the municipal pier was utilized by ocean-going freighters
to transport products to foreign ports. Now, there is a port facility
at Estes Head. The vast majority of products shipped have been forest
products, such as paper and paper pulp and wood chips, although other
cargo is sometimes shipped. The people who serve this port have an
international reputation for efficiency, resulting in the facility
exceeding its designed capacity by many times! (See the Eastport
Port Authority's website.)
When a ship is in port, the massive vessels are visibly apparent
from near the downtown area of Lubec.
Eastport is the most easterly City in the United States. (Lubec
is the easternmost town, as well as the easternmost point -- at Sail
Rock just offshore from West
Quoddy Lighthouse -- in the U.S.) Being such, every Fourth
of July, Eastport holds the nation's first flag raising in
the United States. The ceremony takes place on the municipal pier at
sunrise--around 4:45 am!

Sunrise and sunset in Eastport -- like at many other locations on
the Quoddy Loop -- are frequently awe-inspiring!
Notable vantage points include:
Downtown -- Views of Campobello Island
(including the Roosevelt Cottage, the Hubbard
Cottage, and Friar's Head), little Cherry
Island Lighthouse, the F.D. Roosevelt Memorial
International Bridge, and both the Mulholland Light
and the Lubec Lighthouse (the "Sparkplug").
From this side of the island, and for the early riser, "sunrise
over Campobello" can be admired.
Carryingplace Cove -- Magnificent sunsets over Cobscook
Bay and vast intertidal clam flats.
Shackford Head at Shackford
Head State Park -- A panoramic view of the world's largest
Atlantic salmon aquaculture operation,
Cobscook Bay, and Campobello Island.
During the War of 1812, the islands and mainland
of the area were claimed by both Great Britain and the United States.
A shotless battle occurred at Eastport's then-existing Fort Sullivan,
when the British Navy sailed in and threatened the island. With
overwhelming troop strength, and without a shot fired, they seized
the fort and Moose Island, renaming the fort "Fort Sherbrooke,"
and building some additional defenses, as well as the still-existing
powder magazine near Shead High School. Being held by British troops
for four years, the Treaty of Ghent settled the local boundary
between Canada and the United States, making Eastport American, once
again.
During the first few days of July each year, Eastport
has an annual Old Home Week celebration, with activities to celebrate
and entertain former and current residents, as well as the largest
4th of July Parade in Maine! The celebrations include lots
of activities and entertainment, visitation by a Navy
ship (nearly every year), and fireworks on
the evening of July 4th. Be sure to visit the Eastport
4th of July Committee's website, which lists the latest details
of the celebrations.
Farms at Sea
Maine's first sardine canning business began
here, but now Eastport and the surrounding Maine and New Brunswick
communities make up the North American capital for Atlantic
salmon aquaculture, where salmon are grown in sea
pens (also known as salmon aquaculture sites).
Another sea farming operation, the first commercial Nori
seaweed (used in sushi) production and processing
facility in North America began here.
The Shop-at-the-Commons
features 40 selected artisans with work representing "the
earth" theme and are displayed in our beautifully
renovated waterfront store.
One of Eastport's 29 buildings on the National
Register of Historic Places, the Commons also has
classroom/meeting space and professional office space
for rent.

Built (circa 1775) on Todd's Head during the
Revolutionary War, the Todd House is a classic New England full
cape with massive center chimney and a unique "good
morning" staircase.
In 1801, in what is now a guest room, Eastern
Lodge No. 7 of the Masonic Order was chartered; cornerstone
marks the event.
Breakfast is served in the common room before a
huge fireplace and bake oven, in surroundings reminiscent of
the revolutionary era.
The Todd House, owned by a local historian and
educator, has in its library many volumes of local history.
Its rooms are furnished with period antiques
and enhanced by a collection of local historic artifacts.
The spacious yard, with its cook-out
facilities, affords an ever-changing view of the bay and its
islands. Glorious sunrises and sunsets enhance the natural
beauty of the area.
Handicapped accessible. Children and pets are
welcome!
