Passamaquoddy and Loyalists
St. Andrews-by-the-Sea
Minister's Island
Other St. Andrews Resources
Originally occupied by the Passamaquoddy, Loyalists to the Crown from the American Revolution settled here. The situation for settlement was ideal, with abundant natural resources in timber and fish. Area old-growth trees were destined for use as masts by the King's ships, were cut in great numbers, and then shipped to England.
Named for St. Andrews, Scotland, this beautiful community sits on a delta-shaped penninsula, with the St. Croix River to the west, and Passamaquoddy Bay to the south and east. The town even has its own islands, Minister's Island to the east, and Navy Island (St. Andrews Island) to the south, as well as a now-retired, but colorful, lighthouse at Lighthouse Point.
Other delightful attractions in town are the Charlotte Archives and Gaol (pronounced "jail"), the Huntsman Aquarium, the Algonquin Resort Hotel and Golf Course, and many shops and restaurants. The waterfront is considerable, offering several types of views and activities. There is the town wharf, with accompanying boating activites, and on the eastern shore, the beach--which seems to go out forever at low tide--is a popular place to go beachcombing. Boat excursions are available, as well.
Inland, there's Chamcook Mountain, which offers a leisurly hike with a spectacular view--the islands and communities to the south: Deer Island, Campobello Island, Grand Manan Island, Eastport (Moose Island), and the Wolf Islands, as well as Pleasant Point Passamaquoddy Reservation, St. Stephen and Calais, St. George, and Black's Harbour.

This island to the east of the St. Andews peninsula has the unique feature of, when the tide is out, offering a roadway on the ocean floor. Thus, it is possible to drive to the island from the mainland, which is done in order to provide organized tours during the summertime. (As the tides rise and fall at a different time each day, consult local tide tables or other local sources for appropriate times for crossing.)
