Lubec Millennium Celebrations
Lubec (originally spelled "Lubeck" in its town charter, and named for the historic "Hansestadt Lübeck" (Hanseatic City of Lübeck) port city in Germany--see Other Lubec, Trescott & Whiting Resources) has a full 93 miles of coastline -- due to many meandering coves and inlets.
This Easternmost town (and Easternmost community) in the United States (the Easternmost city is Eastport), also claims the Easternmost Point in the country. Sail Rock, just offshore from the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse and Quoddy Head State Park, is the most easterly part of the U.S. not covered by water (although it certainly receives its share of sea spray!).

Lubec's views are beautiful and plenty! Visible from within the town boundaries are four Lighthouses (West Quoddy Head Light, the Lubec Channel Light, Mulholland Point Light across from downtown to Campobello Island, and the Whistle on the island of Grand Manan), along with Moose Island in Eastport, as well as numerous smaller islands, aquaculture fish pens, fishing boats, and more!
Stockford Park, just south of the International Bridge, offers a great, closeup view of the Lubec Narrows, with its rapid currents. Numerous seals are frequently seen here, especially during mid-tide, feeding on the fish carried along with the current.

Lubec succeeded Eastport as the sardine canning capitol of the United States. The last sardine packing plant in town, Lubec Packing, ceased operations in late 2001, ending a long history in this industry.
The R.J. Peacock Canning Company, a former sardine cannery, with a sea urchin hatchery. Here, sea urchins are spawned, and then raised to about 1/4" in diameter, to be used for restocking this marine resource which is sold to overseas markets.

McCurdy's Smokehouse, on the National Register of Historic Places, resides along Lubec's colorful waterfront. McCurdy's was the last operating smokehouse in Lubec. It is closed now, but in an effort to retain local culture and history, it is targeted for development as an interactive museum.

Lubec is connected to Campobello Island, New Brunswick, by the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial Bridge, built in the1960s. Until construction of the bridge, a car ferry ran across the short, current-swept span of water known as Lubec Narrows.

Since West Quoddy Head in Lubec is the easternmost place in the U.S., Lubec greeted the new Millennium prior to the rest of the country!

The now-unincorporated town of Trescott is nestled between the towns of Whiting & Cutler to the west, and Lubec to the east. To the north are the shores of Whiting Bay and Straight Bay, and to the south is Grand Manan Channel in the mouth of the Bay of Fundy.
Formerly known as Plantation No. 9, it was incorporated in 1829, named after Major Lemuel Trescott (1751-1826), a patriot from the American Revolution, who had moved to the area in 1784, and had become a prominent citizen. During those early days, the town of Trescott was busy with lumbering, lead mining, and, of course, fishing.
History buffs will appreciate the Trescott Historical Society website. Check for upcoming meetings, as well as for local historic resources.

Do You Like Fishing and Boating?
Whiting's boundaries run roughly parallel to U.S. Route 1 between East Machias & Machiasport to the west and Edmunds & Trescott to the east. Freshwater abounds here, with Gardiner Lake, Holmes Pond, Indian Lake, Josh Pond, Rocky Lake, Orange Lake, Orange River, Roaring Lake, Little Lake, Western Lake, and Eastern Lake. Not to be left out is Whiting's saltwater assets on Holmes Bay to the west, and Whiting Bay to the east.
Whiting began as Township No. 12, and then became Orangetown, before receiving its current title. The town took its name from Timothy Whiting, an 1829 Maine legislator.
The first white settler of Whiting was General John Crane, who had participated in the Boston Tea Party, and fought in the war against the French, as well as in the American Revolution.
Yes, until the 1997 school year, Whiting had the distinction of having a two-room schoolhouse, which has now been enlarged by adding offices--but retaining just two classrooms! The school resides at the intersection of US-1 and Maine Route 189. The lower grades are taught here, and its reputation in education is excellent. Move over, Little House on the Prairie!
