Island Park by the Whirlpool
One of the West Fundy Isles (along with Campobello Island, and Grand Manan Island)--and a sister island to Moose Island, Eastport, Deer Island sits on the 45th Parallel (halfway between the Equator and the North Pole), and stretches nearly entirely across Passamaquoddy Bay. One local story says that the residents of Back Bay, New Brunswick, so misliked the people of Eastport that they hurled rocks their way -- numerous in quantity, but with insufficient loft and strength -- so that the missles accumulated into what is now Deer Island!

In truth, Deer Island is a friendly, quiet place, littered with small, scenic fishing villages and, as always, is accessable only by ferry or boat.
A free New Brunswick government ferry operates all year between Butler Point in Lambertville, at the north end of the island, and L'Etete, on the New Brunswick mainland. During the months of July, August, and part of September, toll ferries operate from Deer Island Point, on the island's southern tip, to Campobello Island, New Brunswick. For those traveling further, both of these routes connect to the mainland.

The Deer Island Recreation Council operates Deer Island Point Park during the summer months. Campsites and picnic sites are available there. Also, there is a pebble beach, a ferry landing, and wonderful views of the tides, islands, and -- especially -- Old Sow Whirlpool, which lurks just offshore! (Swimming is not prudent here, folks!)
