Campobello Island is one of several principal islands in the western Bay of Fundy. (The others include Deer Island, Grand Manan Island, and Moose Island, Eastport). It has a rich history, which includes the Native American Passamaquoddys, early French explorers, British settlement by Captain William Owen, and a sometimes ambivilant relationship with neighboring Maine and the United States. The island's museums reflect the importance of Campobello Island to local inhabitants, as well as to world governments, and its parks reflect its natural, physical beauty and significance. |
During the 1930s, Campobello Island became the summer home of many wealthy Victorian families, (most notably, the Roosevelts). The Roosevelt-Campobello International Park is a monument to Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, to that era, and to Campobello Island and its people.
A visit to the Campobello Island Library and Museum in the village of Welshpool is well worth the trip for those interested in displays on the island's facinating history, for historical literature, or for a pleasant book to read.

Fishing is the principle industry on Campobello Island. Along its shores are numerous herring weirs (locally, pronounced "wares") -- fish traps invented by Native Americans, an invention still in use today.
A more recent innovation to the area are the aquaculture sites off shore. Here, thousands of Atlantic Salmon, as well as Rainbow Trout -- and other species -- are raised in the chilly waters of the area. For the inquisitive, boat tours of fish pen sites are available.
Campobello Island's natural beauty includes views of Fundy Bay, the surrounding island and mainland communities, and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.

No visit would be complete without viewing the two lighthouses at Campobello Island, East Quoddy Head Light (officially known as Head Harbour Light) and Mulholland Point Light (which is in a separate section of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park). The Mulholland Point Light is a terrific spot for a picnic (tables are sited there), for great photographs of the lighthouse with the village of Lubec in the background across the narrows, and for watching the numerous seals that feed on fish and frolic in the current during mid-tide.
The ferry vessels which ply the waters year-'round between Grand Manan Island and Blacks Harbour are frequent sights to visitors of East Quoddy Light. And as a bonus, during July, August, and into September, whales can frequently be seen--even heard, at times--from the East Quoddy Light area.
From there, for those with a sharp eye, other lighthouses can be seen: Southern Wolf Island Light; Bliss Island Light; Greens Point Light (officially known as L'Etete Passage Light) near L'Etete on the New Brunswick mainland; Leonardville Light, on Deer Island; and Pea Point near Blacks Harbour.
At the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial Bridge area, as well as from trails in the Roosevelt Campobello International Park's natural area, the Lubec Channel Light can be seen.
Viewing from Liberty Point, at the island's southernmost tip -- also within the Roosevelt Park natural area -- West Quoddy Head Light can be seen across the Quoddy Narrows. And, 'way out on the north end of Grand Manan Island, the"Whistle" (Long Eddy Light) stands guard.

Another park in addition to Roosevelt-Campobello International Park, is the Herring Cove Provincial Park. Its two-mile, crescent, sand-crested pebble beach, wooded campground, hiking trails, and nine-hole golfcourse (with commanding view of the Bay of Fundy) offer many refreshing, rewarding experiences. |
"The Friar" stone chimney along the shore at Friar's Head in Roosevelt Campobello International Park |
During July, August, and part of September, toll ferry service regularly takes passengers and vehicles from Campobello to Deer Island. If going further, the traveller can take the free government ferry to L'Etete on the mainland of New Brunswick, or the toll ferry to Moose Island, Eastport, Maine, which connects by causeway to Pleasant Point Passamaquoddy Reservation on the Maine mainland.
