Commemorated by this 1896 pink granite marker at a state roadside park on US Route 1 North, Perry is located on the 45th Parallel -- halfway between the Equator and the North Pole. Straddle the line, and see if one side is cooler than the other!

History

Township No. 1, now Perry, was purchased by a group from Massachusetts in the late 1780s. A provision of the sale was that 20 settlers were to be each given 100 acres of land here. The area prospered from its sale of lumber to England, until the resource was depleted. (The area has since reforested.)

Incorporated in 1818, the town was named for Commodore Oliver Perry, who had defeated the British on Lake Erie during the War of 1812.

Assets

Perry has beautiful shores, forest, and is the home of Boyden Lake, where you can take a refreshing freshwater swim or go fishing. Another wonderful spot, Gleason Point Park, off Shore Road (which intersects with US Rt-1), has a saltwater boat ramp and picnic area, and offers a beautiful view of herring weirs and Deer Island, New Brunswick. At night, the park is a breathtaking vantagepoint for viewing the night sky and such phenomena as the Aurora Borealis, meteor showers, and comets.

Osprey

Serious birders and amateurs alike will enjoy the frequently large number of ospreys which cruise the Little River estuary where it is crossed by US Route 1, just east of Maine Route 190. It isn't uncommon to see several -- sometimes seven or more -- osprey seeking a meal of tasty fish! And, if you look along the shore on the inland side of the highway, you might be lucky enough to see a mother fox with her pups!

"Passamaquoddy"

(Pass'-uh-muh-kwah'-dee)

Literally, "plenty-pollock-place," and "people who fish for pollock."

First Nations

The Passamaquoddy people have a proud history, and have resided in the greater area for thousands of years. They hunted inland, and fished on the islands and coast. When Champlain and Sieur de Mons -- the first Europeans to explored the area -- arrived, they were met by the Passamaquoddy.

Sipayik

Pleasant Point Passamaquoddy Reservation sits on a penninsula, known by its residents as "Sipayik" (zih-'bahy-ihg). The reservation and trust lands include most of the land from Perry at Maine Route 190, at the junction of U.S. Route 1, to the tip of the penninsula. Another Passamaquoddy reservation resides at Indian Township, just north of Princeton, Maine.

The community has its own school, health center, housing authority, youth center, fire department, ambulance service, and police department. Tribal Government offices are situated along Route 190, near the baseball diamond.

At the end of the penninsula begins a tidal dike, or dam, built for the never-completed Passamaquoddy Bay Tidal Power Project of the 1930s. The dam now serves as a causeway, supporting Route 190 on its way to, and across, some of the islands that make up the city of Eastport.

Waponahki Museum & Resource Center

The Waponahki Museum & Resource Center is the Tribe's repository of historic artifacts and culture. Here, there are displays of tribal history, as well as ongoing work on the Passamaquoddy language dictionary.

Revolutionary War Monument

The Passamaquoddy fought with the colonists against the British during the American Revolution, (and also fought with the U.S. in subsequent wars) and in commemoration of these brave warriors, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) placed a monument in the community at Pleasant Point.
