Machias

(Muh-tchai'-uhs)

Machias (a corruption of the Native American name, "Mechises"), means "a bad run of water," or "bad little falls," an appropriate name for the river which runs through the town. Bad Little Falls Park, between US Highway 1 and Maine Route 92, offers a splendid view of the reason for the name. (Parking is available on Route 92, but not on US 1.)

Bad Little Falls

The mouth of the Machias River was of importance to Aboriginal Americans, who apparently gathered here in great numbers in the autumn.

During European settlement, the Machias area was an strategic location for lumber and trade -- a fact attested to by a map drawn of the area in 1527 by the master of an English schooner.

The first naval battle of the American Revolution was fought here. A monument to that battle is Burnham Tavern, where a wounded British officer was taken for medical treatment, although he later died from his wound. Two commissioned American privateers, Foster and Jeremiah O'Brien, angered the British so much that they burned several buildings in the area, but were driven off by Americans and Passamaquoddy forces.

Machias is home to the University of Maine at Machias, and is in the middle of blueberry country! Experience our Annual Blueberry Festival each August.

Cutler

Cutler has one of the best harbors on the Atlantic coast, being deep, with an island lighthouse at the mouth, and surrounded by high ground. It is also one of the most scenic harbors. A drive to the opposite side of the harbor provides a wonderful view of the fishing boats, harbor, and village, and also provides access to Western Head hiking trail, as well as the Bold Coast hiking trail.

Other assets include the Cutler Coast trails.
